April Theme: Poetry
April is National Poetry Month and so this month you will find highlights of various poets or anthologies of poetry.
Recommended Grades: 5-8
Langston Hughes is one of the nation’s greatest and most beloved African-American poets. His poems reflect the language and culture of African-Americans and their struggle for equal rights.
Lesson idea: Read aloud the poems in Poetry for Young People: Langston Hughes and discuss the racial and social history of America at the time. Pair this book with Coming Home: From the Life of Langston Hughes
by Floyd Cooper. Discuss ways that Hughes life played a role in his poetry.
