R is for Rhyme: A Poetry Alphabet by Judy Young

April Theme:  Poetry

April is National Poetry Month and so this month you will find highlights of various poets or anthologies of poetry.

Recommended Grades: 3-5

R is for Rhyme: A Poetry Alphabet (Alphabet Books) is a fantastic resource to use to model and demonstrate various terms related to poetry. The author provides a poem as an example of the term as well as a detailed definition of the term.

Lesson idea: Choose a component of poetry to study (onomatopoeia, alliteration, metaphor) or a type of poem (narrative, limerick, sonnet).  Begin by reading aloud about the component or type of poetry and the example poem.  Provide other examples of poetry with the component or type of poem you are studying.  Have students create a classroom anthology of poetry using the component/type of poem you have studied.
