Miss Malarkey Leaves No Reader Behind by Judy Finchler and Kevin O’Malley

Theme: Creating a Classroom Full of Readers and Writers

Reading Workshop: Challenging Students

Recommended Grades: 3rd -5th grade

Miss Malarkey Leaves No Reader Behind finds Miss Malarkey determined to turn every last one of her students into a book lover.  She sways even the most stubborn nonreaders, but is left with one.  Can she convince him to trade in his video games for books in time to meet the principal’s challenge of reading 1,000 books in a school year?

Lesson Idea: Read aloud this book.  Challenge your students to read a certain number of books for the school year.  Help students set reading goals.  Provide students with reading logs/journals.  Ask them to list the books they read in their journals, and write briefly about each book and whether they liked it or disliked it and why.

I just read this last night at B&N. I love it! I’m so glad Miss Malarkey doesn’t give up! AND, I love the principal! It’s a great story.
