Paint Me a Poem: Poems Inspired by Masterpieces of Art by Justine Rowden

April Theme:  Poetry

April is National Poetry Month and so this month you will find highlights of various poets or anthologies of poetry.

Recommended Grades: 3-5

Paint Me a Poem: Poems Inspired by Masterpieces of Art is a great model to demonstrate for students how poems can come from anywhere.  As the author walked through the National Gallery of Art one day, she was inspired by the paintings she saw, and in her head began to hear music.  The music became a poem and this book is a collection of thirteen poems inspired by famous artwork.

Lesson idea: Provide students with artwork or pictures (a great way to collect pictures/photographs is by using pictures from old calendars) and then ask them to create a poem based on their thoughts and feelings when looking at the picture.  Or, speak with the art teacher and provide a collection of student artwork for students to become inspired by.
