With summer beginning for some teachers, and just around the corner for others, I thought I would take this month to post professional books that may be of use when using picture books in the classroom.
6 + 1 Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide (Grades 3 and Up) is my ultimate “go-to” resource when teaching the Six Traits. Early in my teaching career, when my county was just beginning to use the Six Traits, I bought this book and I haven’t looked back. This book provides everything you need to teach and assess student writing. Ruth Culham is THE person you want by your side as you plan and assess writing instruction. Her knowledge of The Six Traits is unmatchable. For those of you that teach primary grades, there is a sister book, 6+1 Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide for the Primary Grades. She has also recently written Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide for Middle School (Theory and Practice (Scholastic)) as well. These books are just the tip of the iceberg, Ruth has written so many more resources. I would recommend every last one!
Disclosure: Though my book will be published by Scholastic, I was in no way influenced to write this about Ruth Culham or to promote the Scholastic Corporation. All of the thoughts in this post are my own, personal feelings about Ruth Culham and her work.
